How to find a Therapist in Dallas [part II]

In part one, we discussed how to hone in on what you are looking for on your therapeutic journey, what questions to ask yourself, and platforms you can use to begin your therapist search. In part two, I want to help you learn more about how a therapist is the right fit for you.

Most therapists offer what is called a consultation call, which is a brief phone call to learn more about if the therapist will be a good fit for you. This is a time where you can ask questions about their therapeutic approach, educational background, experience, pricing, and policies. The therapist will usually ask several questions as well to learn more about what you are wanting to work on. Do not hesitate to come prepared with questions as you vett your top three therapists, as these questions will help you learn more about their experience, approach, and training skills.

Questions to ask your potential therapist:

  1. Do you have experience working with clients that have similar concerns?

  2. What is your niche?

  3. How do you structure your therapy sessions?

  4. Do you provide homework?

  5. What training/education have you had that helps you better understand this topic(s)?

  6. Have you been to therapy?

After gathering information from your top 3 therapists using these questions, you are now more equipped to schedule an appointment with the therapist whom you feel is most qualified and has understood what your therapy goals are. You can continue to ask questions along your therapy journey, to assure that the therapeutic relationship is a safe space for you to talk about what is important to you. Finding the therapist that you want to work with may feel daunting, and hopefully narrowing it down, using verified search engines, and asking the right questions will help you along the way.
